The number of climate displaced migrant at Dhaka city is rapidly increasing, and the situation is now alarming.
According to the Global climate index, Bangladesh is one of the highest vulnerable nations to climate change. Bangladesh has to face the impact of global warming; long-lasting flood is happening almost every year in the country. The coastal area people are experiencing Cyclone, tornados and tidal surges. These impacts create a new generation of destitute people called ‘climate refugees.’ And so for a large number of people seek refuge in Dhaka every year.
These people have been compelled to migrate in search of livelihood are traditionally taking shelter in the slum of the capital. Some of them create their tenuous refuge at footpaths, over the bridge, rail stoppage. They occupied the public spaces. Many of them lead a floating life in the city. The Village farmers and cultivators are now working at Factories, driving Rickshaws or shelling Ferry at Street. The women and children are the most vulnerable to climate change impact. They have to suffer a lot. Migrate Women are often at risk of human trafficking. Many of them are forced to work as a sex worker.
Many communities and individual displaced from their land. In most cases, the migrants are destitute. Their poverty is further build up by impacts of climate change. Some of them had a middle-class status at the village level. But now they all have to live at the urban slum with very high population density and poor sanitation.
According to access information on populace displacement, it has been discovered that 39 million individuals in Bangladesh were uprooted by significant natural events like flood and cyclone more than 40 years. At the same time around 48 percent of the aggregate populace completely rely upon Agriculture lose their traditional profession because of the climate change. Most of them have migrated to Dhaka.
But Dhaka itself is one of the most vulnerable cities to climate change. The city does not have a proper urbanization plan. The population density of Dhaka is quite unbelievable, and the increasing number of vehicles is making it a horror city. The Temperature level of Dhaka increased from rising levels of vehicle exhaust emissions, limitless industrial activity and unnecessary use of air conditioning’.
The person of coastal Bangladesh is the most climates changed displaced people of the country. Climate change has destroyed their livelihoods and infrastructure. Their paddy fields are no greener. The salty water has come, and they can only farm shrimp now.
So what could be the possible solution to this situation? Shelter solutions are urgently needed. An Updated and reliable census of slum and pavement dwellers should start very soon. Some of the basic needs must be fulfilled for the climate migrant. The government may offer some works and create some job sector at the coastal area for the climate aggrieved people.
