Bachchu murder: 2 suspects killed in Munshiganj ‘gunfight’

    Kabir Humayun: Two suspects in the murder of progressive writer-publisher Shahjahan Bachchu were killed in a “gunfight” in Sreenagar upazila of Munshiganj early yesterday.
    Kaka alias Boma Shamim and Ekhlas, the two suspected militants, both hailing from Jamalpur district, were directly involved in the killing of Bachchu.
    Maksuda Lima, additional superintendent of police in Munshiganj, said the incident occurred when police signaled a motorbike to halt around 1:45am at a police check post on KC Road in the upazila but the bike tried to speed away.
    “As policemen chased the bike, they opened fire on the law enforcers forcing the police to fire back in retaliation triggering a gunfight,” the official said.
    At one stage the duo was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot, she said, adding, three police personnel were also injured in the incident.
    Police recovered two machetes, 11 crude bombs, a pistol and a motorcycle from the scene.
    On June 11, 2018, unidentified criminals shot dead Shahjahan Bachchu, a writer-publisher and former CPB leader in Sirajdikhan upazila of Munshiganj.
    Bachchu, 55, was the acting editor of weekly Amader Bikrampur and former general secretary of Munshiganj chapter of Communist Party of Bangladesh. He had his own publishing house “Bishaka Prokashoni”.
    Abdur Rahman, the prime suspect and also a member of banned militant outfit Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), was killed in a reported gunfight with police on the night of June 27.
