Kabir Humayun: The High Court yesterday directed the government to give first-class division facilities to acclaimed photographer Shahidul Alam in jail.
Shahidul, 63, is now in jail in a case filed under the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Act, reports The Daily Star.
The HC bench of Justice Borhanuddin and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman passed the order following a writ petition filed by Shahidul Alam’s wife Prof Rahnuma Ahmed.
Rahnuma, in the petition, sought HC’s order upon the home secretary and jail authorities to provide Shahidul Alam with first-class division facilities in jail.
Now, Shahidul will get a bed, a table, a chair, a fan and other relevant facilities inside jail as per the jail code.
Law enforcers picked up Shahidul from his home in the capital’s Dhanmondi area on August 5 night. The police filed the case against him under ICT Act the following day.
The court put Shahidul on a seven-day remand after police produced him at a Dhaka court, seeking 10-day remand.
He told the court that he was tortured in custody. Police, however, refuted the allegation.
Upon completion of his remand, he was sent to jail on August 13.
