Kazi Rezaul Hoque, Chairman, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC):
The allegations of corrupt practices are unexpected and regrettable despite pay hike forgovernment employees. The government employees can easily lead a decent life with the current pay structure. The allegations of corruption against the government employees are unexpected despite a decent salary structure. Exemplary punishment should be meted out to those who are involved with corrupt practices. Only then, we will succeed in fighting corruption.
How can we rein in corruption at BRTA (Bangladesh Road Transport Authority) office? We have not been able to develop sufficient mechanism to check corruption in each office. It would yield positive result if we could introduce automation system for the fitness of vehicles. A vehicle will be put on a machine; the machine will tell if everything is alright.
If we want a corruption-free society, then we should go for automation. We have not been able to introduce all the technologies available to us. We have heard that BRTA introduced automation system. Regrettably, the machine has gone out order and now not in use. The government should take the matters into cognizance.
Bangladesh has come a long way in automation. We should develop a system where everything will be tested by machines on a regular basis. There will be no manual job; everything will be automated.
Anti-Corruption Commission is an independent agency. The commission can take action if any allegation is leveled with sufficient information. As far as I am concerned, the commission has already taken some actions. They can take more actions if proper information is supplied. I think the expectation remain unfulfilled for which the government hiked salary of almost hundred percent of government employees.
The government should take much more effective steps to curb corruption. Every office should be asked to keep the CCTV functional so that the members of the ACC or any law-enforcing agency can check the footage. They can also come to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and check the footage if the people are receiving services properly. A concerted programme is also needed to fight corruption.
