Bauphal homesteads collapsing in Tetulia river erosion

    Desk Report: Nearly 50 houses of Dhulia union have collapsed into water in the severe erosion of the Tetulia river, reports The Observer bd.
    Dhulia NK and Barujibipara Government Primary School and Dhulia Dakhil Madrasa, along with more than 1000 homesteads are threatened by the continued erosion.
    Chief Whip of the Jatiya Sangsad ASM Feroz MP visited the erosion area recently, and promised to protect the people from the erosion. But no effective action has been taken till now.
    During the inspection of the erosion area of Dhulia union, it is known that half of the houses of Dhulia village area already lost in the river.
    Jame Mosque, Mia Bari, Moti Khalifa and Omar Ali’s houses have been devoured by the river.
    Salim Mia, who lost everything in the river erosion, said that he had about 10 acres of land. Tetulia has now taken away everything.
    He is living with his family on the street now. Once he had his own cattle farm, now works with others to provide livelihood for the family.
    He said that hundreds of families are becoming destitute as Dhulia union villages disappearing in the river every year. But the government is not taking any action to stop the erosion.
    Dhulia Union Parishad chairman Anisur Rahman Rob said that most of the areas of Dhulia, Ghurchakati and Char Basudeb Pasha village were dissolved in the river water.

    He said, every year many people are becoming homeless due to erosion of Tetulia and make their way to the city.
    Assistant teacher of Dhulia NK Government Primary School, Nasir Uddin, said after his house was destroyed, he took shelter at Kalisuri village. At present, his school has also been broken.
    Khalek Khan, Faruk Mia, Moti Khalifa and Humayon Dewan, who took shelter on the road after the river erosion, said that if the government steps are not taken to prevent erosion soon, then Mothbaria and Dhulia villages will be erased from the map.
    Bauphal Upazila Nirbahi Officer Pijus Chandra Dey said that he visited the eroding areas on Friday. Some parts of NK Government Primary School Road from Dhulia Launch ghat were dissolved on Thursday.
    The Bauphal Upazila administration will soon be providing support to some families who have been victim of river erosion, he added.
