Keep Rohingya returnees in UN-supervised buffer zone: NHRC

M Humayun Kabir: All Rohingya returnees should be kept in a United Nations-supervised buffer zone before rebuilding their homes destroyed by the Myanmar army, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) recommended.
“A little progress is seen in repatriation of Rohingya. World leaders have only given lip service in the last one year over resolving the crisis,” NHRC member Enamul Haque said at a press conference arranged by the commission yesterday, reports The Daily Star.
The commission demanded punishment for Myanmar army who were responsible for the killing, rape and human rights violations against the Rohingya people.
And, United Nations is responsible for ensuring the punishment of those responsible, it said.
NHRC also recommended Bangladesh government to take a tougher stance for quick repatriation of Rohingya refugees.
It urged Myanmar to ensure citizenship, dignity and human rights of all Rohingya returnees.
The commission also urged for implementation of the five-point recommendation placed by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during the 72nd General Assembly of United Nations on September 21, 2017.
August 25 marked the first anniversary of the launching of crackdown by Myanmar’s military on Rohingyas in Rakhine State driving more than 700,000 Rohingya refugees into Bangladesh.
