Dhaka city corporations ‘clear’ almost all of 23,500 tonne Eid cattle waste

Bdnews24: Dhaka South Mayor Md Sayeed Khokon and Md Jamal Mostafa of Dhaka North mayoral panel came up with information on Eid cattle waste management and the claims at news briefings a day after the Eid on Thursday.
Mayor Khokon had promised like the previous year that the animal waste in his areas would be removed within 24 hours.
“We’ve already removed 90 percent waste, which is 15,000 tonnes. We are working to remove the rest,” he told the briefing on Thursday afternoon.
His city corporation was expecting more waste as many would slaughter cattle on Thursday and Friday, Khokon said.
Abdullah Haroon, the Executive Engineer of DSCC’s waste management department, told bdnes24.com they estimated that they would have to remove another 3,000 tonnes of cattle waste.
After rains, the quantity of Eid cattle waste was 19,200 tonnes in Dhaka South last year, according to Haroon.
“We estimate the amount would decline as there has been no rain,” he added.
Khokon said the DSCC workers will work until all the waste is cleared.
Dhaka North’s Mostafa said they have removed 8,500 tonnes of cattle waste.
More people slaughtered cattle at places designated by the authorities than they did last year, according to him.
Khokon on Wednesday expressed frustrations at the people’s apathy to use the designated slaughtering places.
People in many neighbourhoods, however, cleared their areas after slaughtering cattle and dumped the waste to dustbins.
Golam Mostafa, a resident of Kuril, said they themselves cleared the waste from the cattle they had slaughtered.
Some expressed satisfaction over the city corporations’ efforts this year.
“We are calling the hotlines whenever we see any waste,” said one Harunur Rashid of Rampura.
Around 21,000 city corporation workers are removing the wastes this year.
The city corporations have opened hotlines to get information on cattle wastes waiting to be cleared.

Dhaka South residents have been asked to dial 09611000999 and Dhaka North 029830936.
