Bdnews24: Half the cattle slaughtered throughout the year are sacrificed during the Eid-ul-Azha, making it a challenge for the Dhaka city corporations to clear the waste.
The government designated 625 places in Dhaka South and 549 in North like previous years to contain environment pollution and make cleaning easier, but the citizens paid no heed. Like previous years, they slaughtered and processed meet at garages or on alleys outside their houses on Wednesday morning, leaving the waste and bloodstained water on the streets. The situation is feared to turn worse after a day or two if the remaining wastes start to rot before those are removed. “Residents of the city haven’t responded well. It’s frustrating,” Khokon said after inaugurating the work to free Dhaka of sacrificial cattle waste at Dholaikhal in the afternoon.
Md Jamal Mostafa, head of the panel that is doing the Dhaka North mayor’s job after the death of Annisul Huq, inaugurated the clean-up operations at Uttara.
They hoped it would be possible to remove almost all the cattle wastes within 24 hours as promised.
The city corporations removed 2 million tonnes of waste from Dhaka after the Eid last year, Khokon said.
“The quantity will be a little high this year. But our workers are ready,” he said.
Around 21,000 city corporation workers are removing the wastes this year.
The city corporations have opened hotlines to get information on cattle wastes waiting to be cleared.
Dhaka South residents have been asked to dial 09611000999 and Dhaka North 029830936.
