11 university students denied bail again

    Kabir Humayun: A Dhaka court yesterday denied bail to 11 students of different private universities accused of vandalism and attacking policemen during demonstrations for safe roads.
    Metropolitan Magistrate Laskar Shohel Rana passed the order after hearing the bail petitions.
    ts are – Shakhawat Hossain Nijhum, Shihab Shahriar, Saber Ahmed Ullas, Ajijul Karim Antar, Rashedul Islam, Md Hasan, Mushfikur Rahman, Redwan Ahmed, Reza Refat Ahmed, Shimanta Sarker and Iftekher Hossain.
    The courts have repeatedly
    denied bail to twenty-two students of seven private universities, who were arrested on the charges in two cases filed with Badda and Bhatara police stations.
    Earlier on August 7 and 9, the students appealed together for bail but their petitions were rejected.
    The students of seven private universities — East West, North South, Southeast, Brac, Independent University of Bangladesh (IUB), International University of Business Agriculture and Technology (IUBAT) and Asian University of Bangladesh — were arrested on August 6 following clashes between students and police aided by alleged ruling party men in Bashundhara Residential and Bhatara areas.
    However, those who attacked protesters and journalists with sticks and machetes during the demonstrations remain untouched.Police, meanwhile, arrested at least 97 people, mostly students, in 51 cases in the capital alone over similar charges.
    Since the student protest for road safety began on July 29 bringing Dhaka to a standstill, according to Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
