UK parliament car crash: Driver held on terrorism offences

Hossen Sohel: A man was detained on suspicion of terrorist offences after a car hit pedestrians and crashed into a barrier outside the UK parliament.
The incident happened about 7:37am local time yesterday, police said.

London’s Metropolitan Police said a number of pedestrians were injured in the incident but at this stage none of them are believed to be in a life-threatening condition, reports ABC News.

Footage on social media showed a handcuffed man being led away by heavily armed police.

Eyewitnesses said the driver of the Ford Fiesta drove from one side of the road to the other, striking a group of cyclists before hitting the barricades.

“Someone [was] driving towards parliament at speed, it wasn’t normal, it’s not a minor, like, accident, it’s not like road traffic incident,” witness Jason Williams told UK’s Sky News.

Television images showed police pointing their guns at a vehicle which appeared to have entered a lane used for access to the Parliament building before it stopped at a security barrier.

London’s Metropolitan Police said they are treating the crash outside Parliament as a terrorist incident.

Authorities said in a statement that a man in his 20s was “arrested on suspicion of terrorist offences”.

No one else was in the car, which police said is being searched at the scene of the accident.

They added that no weapons have been recovered at this stage.

Nearby Westminster Underground station was closed and the building cordoned off.

No one was being allowed entry to Parliament.

British Prime Minister Theresa May said her thoughts were with those injured in the incident.

As Parliament is in recess for summer most MPs are not using the building and Ms May is currently on holiday outside the UK.
