Arresting university students is a manifestation of political bankruptcy of ruling parties

Khalequzzaman, General Secretary, Socialist Party of Bangladesh (SPB):
Instead of arresting the assaulters on the movement for safe roads, the university students were arrested; this is nothing but a manifestation of political bankruptcy of the ruling parties.
The photographs of students and journalists coming under attack during the movement for road safety were published. However, no action was taken or none of the attackers was arrested. Regrettably, 22 students of different universities were sent to jail. This is a manifestation of political bankruptcy of the ruling parties.
The ruling Awami League has lost its control over the steering while driving on the highways of development. It is now moving at a breakneck speed. The alienation of the incumbent government from the people has reached such a level that it is now in disarray. The government has described the movement for road safety as a logical one. On the other hand, the government is trying to protect the people who launched attack on the students and the journalists.
As a whole, anarchy and disorder reached such a stage that the ruling parties do not have the capacity to rein in it. The alienation has reached such an extent that they do not have the chance to retain power or return to power based on an election or the consent of the people.
Against this backdrop, they are now resorting to repressive acts without taking lesson from history. This will not bring any good for them. At the same time the country is now being pushed to the precipice. Therefore, we demand immediate and unconditional release of 22 university students and the assaulters be identified and brought to book.
