Student run over in Rangpur, protests flare

    Kabir Humayun: A school student was run over by a speeding bus in Rangpur city yesterday, prompting locals to block the road in protest.
    The victim, Md Zion, 15, son of Zahidul Islam and class X student of Collectorate School and College, was killed in Darshana area around 11am, reports The Daily Star.
    Family said, Zion was returning home from tuition on a bicycle when the bus ran him over, leaving him dead on the spot.
    Students and locals took to the street and blocked Kurigram-Rangpur road in protests for some time, said Saifur Rahman, additional superintendent of Rangpur police.
    Last reported, road communication was restored to normalcy at around 2:30pm, he said.
    A large number of police was deployed in the area to avoid any untoward situation.
    On July 29, two college students were run over in Dhaka that sparked a wave of protests besieging the country for eight days in a row.
    As a sequel to the mass protests, police are currently trying to enforce strict measures to check reckless driving on the roads in Dhaka city.
