Desk Report: An important road and several lanes at East Badda in the capital have remained in a dilapidated condition for the last five years, causing immense sufferings for the local people, reports Daily Sun.
Residents said numerous potholes have developed on the Graveyard Road, which was dug around five years ago to set up a drainage line, making it difficult for them to walk during the rainy season.
Expressing frustration over the poor condition of the road and its adjacent lanes, they alleged that the authorities concerned are not taking any step to repair the road, which connects East Badda with Progati Sarani, the main road.
During the rainy season, inhabitants have no option but to walk on the slippery road to reach Progati Sarani.
They said relatives or family members have to carry critically ill persons to the main road for taking them to hospitals as vehicles cannot run on the road and its adjacent lanes during the period.
However, the road and its lanes are full of dust during the dry season.
While visiting the area, it has been found that the condition of the road from Pachtala Bazar to graveyard is extremely bad.
Jahirul Islam, an eighth grader at Bakul Nesa High School, told the daily sun that they have to take off their shoes to go to school due to mud.
“It is very difficult to walk on the road,” he said.
His classmate Hasibur Rahman echoed the same and said the road remains in a dilapidated condition for the last five years.
An elderly man who runs a hotel in the area said the road was dug around four to five years ago to carry out repair work but the work is yet to be completed.
Thousands of people living in the area are using the road to reach Progati Sarani.
Locals said they have informed the elected representatives of the area about the conditions of road and lanes, but nothing happens.
When contacted, local MP AKM Rahmat Ullah has said he is aware of the matter.
“We cannot start construction work of the road and lanes as the entire area was included in Dhaka North City Corporation,” he said.
The area was included in the city corporation last year but the road and lanes have remained in dilapidated conditions for the last five years.
