Unpopular opinion ahead!

TRIGGER WARNING: Unpopular opinon ahead!!–The student protests triggered by a bus running over two college kids five days ago have made for an amazing display for civil action – so far. But by now, the owner and driver of the offending bus have been arrested, the company’s permit canceled and relevant laws moved for review. A minister whose initial reaction fueled the outrage has gone to the home of a victim to apologize. The PM has met with parents of both victims, offered sympathies (and cash support).Few movements ever secure so much result in so short a time. So, why are students persisting with road blockage?–ALSO: And here I am in a minority of (perhaps) one: it is NOT okay for them to be checking papers. To do so with buses for a few days as a form of protest – and civil action – was fine, but I do not accept the “right” of any other citizen to police me. We must know the difference between protest and vigilantism.–The students are able to enforce traffic rules both because the public is giving them a cooperation they never give to the police, and because there is an implicit threat of force/violence in play. When they turn a vehicle away, when they make a cop sing (and humiliate him), it too is an exercise of unlawful force. I mind it in BCL, I mind it in anyone else.–They have my full support if they can continue their protests (now that so much is secured and assured) by lawful and peaceful means, and using social media. They can even come back to the street in a few weeks if the govt fails to follow through on its promises. But continuing unlawful checks – lording it over other citizens – no, I don’t care for it.
