Protests halt Dhaka traffic

    M Humayun Kabir: Hundreds of students from various educational institutes took to the streets in the capital for the third consecutive day protesting death of two college students being run over by a bus on Sunday.
    The students blocked several key points for hours and vandalised and torched buses at some points, reports The Daily Star. Agitating students put two buses on fire around 3:20pm at Jashimuddin Road in Uttara and blocked traffic movement.
    Firemen later doused the flames and movement of vehicles was restored on the road around 5:30pm, said Shafiqul Islam, duty officer of Fire Service and Civil Defence in Uttara. Blockades at Farmgate, Motijheel, Tejgaon, Mirpur Road, Kafrul in Mirpur were cleared after the students withdrew around 3pm while blockades at Uttara and Rampura were withdrawn after 5pm. Protests spread across the capital as hundreds of students demonstrated at different areas in the city demanding safe roads.
