M Hafiz Uddin Khan, President, SHUJAN : If there are pending cases against those being arrested centering the city elections, then why have they not been arrested much sooner? Why should they be arrested in election time? There is actually some sort of ulterior motive behind this.
If there are cases pending against the arrestees, then why not carry out the arrests a few days later after the election is completed? This clearly demonstrates a conspiracy to systematically prevent creating a level playing field. These are scare tactics to intimidate BNP candidates – leaders are being arrested overnight, cases are being filed against them without even their foreknowledge. Elections should be free and fair, where everyone can participate freely. However, this is being prevented in some way or other by the conspirators seeking to win unopposed.
Even the High Court has directed that no party should come under any attack. Every party should be allowed to freely participate in the polls, or else the people’s rights will be infringed.
