Prabhash Amin, Head of News, ATN News: British lawmaker Lord Alexander Carlile is now a legal consultant to BNP’s imprisoned chairperson Khaleda Zia to help fight her cases.
Although he is a lawyer for Khaleda Zia, he is an old foe of Bangladesh. However, I would like to say that there is no connection between Khaleda’s counsel and Bangladesh’s enemy. If it had, he would have been termed as foe of Awami League.
The state and the government are not the same and like this, Awami League and Bangladesh are not the same.
Carlile, a renowned lawyer in London and a member of the British Queen’s Council and House of Lords, is a man of war criminals Jamaat-e-Islam. And, he is now riding on the shoulder of Khaleda Zia or BNP.
During the execution of war criminals of Bangladesh, the British lawyer tried his level best to draw the attention of the world but he could not halt their execution.
Khaleda has been languishing in jail for more than five months. Her lawyers are yet to manage her bail.
On February 8, Khaleda landed in prison after she was handed a five-year jail sentence by a Dhaka court for misappropriating a donation fund of the Zia Orphanage Trust.
It is known to all that Lord Carlile will not be able to manage the bail. So, why was Carlile appointed? I think, he was chosen to help raise loud voice for Khaleda, nothing else.
He has capability of making sound, which he has proved during the execution of war criminals.
To do the same thing, he rushed to Delhi to make sound on Khaleda’s behalf. He raised sound well but could not enter Delhi and finally returned to London where he is now making sound well for Khaleda.
The top level British lawyer first tried to hold a press conference at Delhi Foreign Correspondents Club but it was cancelled; later he tried to hold it at a local five-star hotel.
Duly, Carlile landed the New Delhi Airport on July 12 but the Indian authority did not allow him to enter the country for not having an appropriate visa for his intended purpose. He returned by the same flight.
Later, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader made it clear that Carlile’s visa cancellation is an internal issue of India, but not Bangladesh.
Indeed, Carlile came India only to raise voice for Khaleda and for this, he carried return ticket with his pocket.
However, it is a matter of rejoice for me that the British lawyer witnessed that time has changed and Delhi is still far away.
