Sabah Mannan: Recently hit by a data breach scandal, Mark Zuckerberg-led Facebook said it signed data-sharing deals with dozens of phone and tablet makers over the years. Francisco Varela; leader of Facebook mobile partnerships remarked “Facebook along with many other US tech companies have worked with them and other Chinese manufacturers to integrate their services onto these phones.”
Later this week, the social network plans on ending agreement with Huawei and three other Chinese firms. Facebook also cleared that all the information from the integrations with Huawei was stored on the device and not on Huawei’s servers.
US intelligence officials pointed out that Chinese phones are a threat to national security as they allow foreign espionage. Citing potential security risks, the Pentagon had previously ordered retail outlets on US military bases to stop selling Huawei and ZTE phones. Concerns dating back to 2012 were raised by the House of Representatives Intelligence Committee.
