Sofian Khan: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday mentioned the replacement of one lakh of the displaced Rohingya minorities to Bhasanchar Island in Noakhali will initiate soon for giving them shelter there until their repatriation.
The Prime Minister came up with her remarks while UN Under Secretary General and Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Dr Natalia Kanem met her at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). According to the Prime Minister, 6000 people are working to arrange the accommodation of some 100,000 Rohingyas to Bhashanchar. She said Bangladesh is a disaster-prone country and the upcoming monsoon may cause untold sufferings to the Rohingyas. “So, measures are being taken for their temporary shelter in Bhashanchar. They’ll stay there until their repatriation.”
Some 60 babies are born in on average in the Rohingya camps, said Sheikh Hasina. Bangladesh has been playing the role of a host to the Rohingya people who fled persecutions in Myanmar’s Rakhine state on humanitarian grounds. Local host communities are also cooperating with the Rohingyas in Cox’s Bazar, she added.
