Sayeed Muhammad: Patients being treated at emergency wards at the National Institute of Traumatology & Orthopaedic Rehabilitation, well known as Pongu Hospital, were left to suffer for want of electricity supply since yesterday morning. Power supply was there for just two hours from 8am to 3:22pm, reports bdnews24.com quoting the hospital’s emergency surgery room in-charge Senior Staff Nurse Shafiqul Islam. Beginning his shift at 2pm, Shafiqul found there was no electricity. with his colleagues telling him that the power outage had been out since the morning. Though the hospital has a generator, it cannot supply the electricity required, he said. One doctor, preferring anonymity, said he was working since 8am but had power available for only two hours. He operated upon 10 patients during then, but has been unable to do any more work due to the situation. “There are several patients who need operations urgently, but we cannot perform them.” A man identified as Javed said he brought his brother for treatment from Narayanganj, but in vain. A surgery has not been performed because the load shedding, he cited. When contacted over the allegations, Power Division Supervisor Farooq Ahmed said it was true and the power had been out for some time due to the storm. According to him, there had been no complaints from the hospital. The hospital director, Gani Molla, could not be reached over the phone despite repeated attempts to talk over the sufferings caused by the situation.
