Closure of private universities sans campus won’t be a problem

Prof Dr Mizanur Rahman: According to the law, every private university is to have own campus. And, if any such university is shut for defying the law, it will not cause any difficulties to the students. It is often noticed that the private university authorities carry out their activities on rented houses, apartments and any other ordinary places in the name of academic activities. They are also erecting establishments in this pretext. But they do not contain any institutional shape. The university buildings do not even have enough space for students to do their lab works, recreation and even for sitting properly. It was the lone condition for any private university that it will shift to its own campus to avail recognition.  In the mean time, some universities have shifted to their own campus with some others awaiting relocation. However, most of the universities seem to be breaching the law. They are not taking the matter seriously. But obligations mentioned in the law need to be implemented. It does not matter if any university faces closure. Even the students will not face any trouble. They will study the same curriculum as the one imparted in other universities. Moreover, so many universities in Dhaka is also unexpected. The author is the vice-chancellor of Jagannath University.
