Venice’s iconic canals run DRY after weeks without rain

As water levels dropped to a reported record low of 70cm, unusual weather has left some of Venice’s legendary canals dried out forcing long flat-bottomed boats popularly known as gondolas to park up on the dry land.A combination of high atmospheric pressure inĀ  the upper Adriatic, cold winter weather, low tides caused by the ‘super blue blood moon’ and little rain are some of the reasons for the dried waterways.Despite being prone to heavy flooding several times a year, it is the second year in a row that Venice’s canals have been left without water. Sadly, Venice itself is steadily sinking at a rate of around 1-2mm a year.
