Govt lowers fees to register births and deaths

    The government has reduced the registering cost of births and deaths for Bangladeshi citizens by 75 percent.The Local Government Division on Monday had issued the revision in a notice on the rules for births and deaths registering.As before, births and deaths can be registered in Bangladesh and abroad without any charge within 45 days.Now, births and deaths can be registered for 25 taka at home and $1 abroad up to five years later the events. Before this, the fee was 100 taka at home and $2 abroad.The birth certificate is necessary to obtain a passport, admission to educational institutions, a marriage licence, employment appointments, a spot on the voter list, driving licence, open a bank account, gas, water, telephone, obtain an import and export licence, and electricity connections, to receive a tax identification number, to obtain design approval for homes, car registration, and to obtain a trade licence and national ID card.Death certificate contains the name of the deceased, date of death, location of death and the names of their parents and spouses. The certificate is necessary to receive inherited property or a family pension.Previously, the government had revised the birth and death registration fees on Mar 2.
