Thousands of people stream across Libya’s borders each year. In search of better opportunities these people flee in Europe as refuges or economic migrants. They sold everything they had to finance the journey through Libya to the coast and the gateway to the Mediterranean. Recently fewer boats are making it out of the sea due to the Libyan coastguard’s tight watch which leaves the smugglers to gain something from the migrants. So the migrants and refugees become slaves and the smugglers become masters. Smugglers buy these people in auctions held in a traditional city filled with people leading usual life, and the price of the slaves starts from $400. They fill a boat with 100 people and they may or may not make it, but the smugglers do not care as long as he gets the money. Libyan authorities promised to launch an investigation regarding to this happening.
