There’s not much difference between making career decisions and sailing through the ocean- you need to keep in mind the bigger picture and plan ahead in accordance to it. However, people need to realize that not all career decisions will lead them to success. Here’s a list of a few that people generally end up regretting.
Do not spend your entire life building an image that others will approve of, because eventually that image will fade and people will start clawing away and dig out the real you. Don’t waste too much time investing on people’s opinions that you start to lose yourself. Be confident and be yourself.
•When you are young and walk fresh into the workplace, you will make mistakes, and often you will find yourself being scolded by your seniors. You must understand early on that such moments will define your career. There is no point in giving excuses in such situations, it’s best to apologize and move on. Do not resort to hate mail, negative complaints, and burn bridges with colleagues who you might need by your side in the future. The best thing to do is to learn something from everyone you interact it and be on good terms with your seniors.
•A regular paycheck, an annual holiday break, medical insurance and free weekends can easily make you forget about the life goals you were set on achieving since your high school years. A lot of things can make your professional career stagnant, like a job that makes you too comfortable, too many responsibilities, fear, losing your drive or forgetting your long-term goals. You will notice yourself regretting your decision to not invest in yourself while you were still at your prime and had the required amount of money for it.
•Ask any successful professional and they will tell you about the power of a good network. However, a lot of people fail to take advantage of networking opportunities, especially when in large organizations. Become friends with people from other departments, take part in company events and spend time getting to know people around you. When handing out promotions, the people that the promoters know on a personal level are the ones who will get the upper hand.
•While a title and a good paycheck are attractive, they lose value with time. Give your time to jobs with valuable experiences, significant mentorship opportunities and accelerated learning opportunities. In the long-term, giving priority to growth over money will give you higher earnings.
•Buying a house to settle in early can hurt your career. Employers value mobile employees. They give their high-potential employees an opportunity to travel the world and gain varied experiences and global exposure. In grooming future leaders, they look for employees they can send to various locations around the world to learn about all factions, subsidiaries and global operations.
•If you spend your time and energy adding value to those around you and the organization, you will get paid for it in the long-term. Research proves that the most successful professional focus more on the success of those around them as opposed to their success as individuals.
