It was my brother, an ardent graphic novel fan, who brought up the name of the school. Last evening, my brother, father and I were having a random conversation when, for some reason, the topic of my brother’s dream school came up. My brother mentioned The Kubert School, which surprised both me and my father, since we hadn’t heard of it before. Intrigued by this newfound name, we immediately consulted Google to confirm and found out that the school did exist.

The Kubert School is the only school of its kind in the United States. It offers students a three year intensive education focused on cartooning and graphic art. Founded by the American comic book artist Joe Kubert and his wife in 1976, the school is meant to be an outlet for young, aspiring artists to reach their full potential.

The Kubert School is located in Dover, New Jersey, but also offers housing for both international and domestic students who live too far from a commuting distance. After going through all the details, my father and I immediately started imagining my brother’s future as a renowned comic book artist.

We could see him going places by taking this non-conventional approach. This is what I love the most about my family: we are always encouraged to follow our dreams. And frankly, I think my brother felt a bit intimidated by the fact that we were eager to get him to apply there. I mean, why not?
I feel that at least one of us should follow our crazy dreams. Both my father and I were stopped by reality, but it would be really cool to see my brother do something unique with his life. However, only time will tell.

The school has a three year program which means that they accept students from the tenth grade onwards. My brother is just starting ninth grade this fall, so there’s still time for him to reflect on it. Maybe this will turn out to be a reality, or maybe it will remain in the back of his mind as another silly dream he won’t pursue. Either way, I’m sure he’ll do wonders with his life.

If any of you out there are comic book enthusiasts, would you have taken this opportunity to apply? Or do you think that it’s too unrealistic? Either way it would be something interesting to think about.
