Police in Turkey have fired tear gas and water cannon to disperse hundreds of people protesting against an attack on Radiohead fans. Some 500 people gathered in Istanbul’s central Cihangir neighbourhood on Saturday night in response to a call from activists to protest against the attack.
The protesters shouted “Shoulder to shoulder against fascism!” and criticised President RecepTayyip Erdogan.
On Friday, a mob of around 20 Islamic extremists carrying sticks and bottles attacked Radiohead fans who had gathered at a music shop to hear Radiohead’s new album, A Moon Shaped Pool, which was being streamed online. A video posted online allegedly showing the attack suggested the assailants were angered by participants drinking alcohol during the holy Muslim month of Ramadan.
