Britain’s decision to leave the European Union could have huge consequences for shows such as Game of Thrones, as they won’t be eligible for EU funding.
Large portions of the HBO show are shot in locations across Northern Ireland, meaning that the show has previously received funding from the European Regional Development Fund.
But Britain’s decision to leave means that the show won’t be eligible to receive EU funding when shooting in Northern Ireland, and it could now be forced to tone down its costly production values and big-budget action sequences.
Michael Ryan, The chairman of the Independent Film and Television Alliance (IFTA), told Variety: “The decision to exit the European Union is a major blow to the U.K. film and TV industry.
“Producing films and television programs is a very expensive and very risky business and certainty about the rules affecting the business is a must.”
