To those of you who think Anime is for kids, you better watch Mirai Nikki because it has a more mature story line than those Hindi serials you watch secretly when your mommy is out.
Adapted from the manga series by Sakae Esuno, Mirai Nikki (Future Diary) is the tale of two school goers, their love for each other, and their involvement in a survival game to succeed Deus Ex Machina and become the new God of Time and Space. It is a twisted story filled with blood, gore, violence, and creepy ways of expressing your love that runs for 26 episodes and an epilogue OVA.
The first thing that sets this show apart and puts it on a higher pedestal is the fact that it can entertain a wide range of audience. It is fusion of genres like psychological thriller, suspense, action, supernatural, and romance. It is hard to give an exact description of the plot without giving out any spoilers, since it is so complicated and has some major plot twists. Therefore, I will just describe the two leads. Yuno Gasai, is a strong female lead. She is sweet and nurturing, but can turn into a psychotic killer at any moment to keep the love of her life safe. She holds many dark secrets that are not revealed until the last few episodes of the anime. As Yuno’s character shifts back and forth from being “just your average high school kid” to an “intelligent and ruthless murderer”, there is never a dull moment in the show. You want to hate her, but you end up loving her for her sharpness and calculated moves. Then we have Yukiteru “Yuki” Amano, the male lead. His character is portrayed as a naive coward, who was somewhat useless and annoying at first, but later on, after going through all the hell that the other contestants put him through, he became a bit more mature and smart. There was also enough development for the supporting characters of the show, for us to fall in love with them or feel sympathy for them. Each of the contestants of the game have their own story and some of these stories are just too hard not to cry to. Overall, the anime was successfully executed giving us a nice blend of depth, emotions, and suspense, and can be considered as a must-watch for all you psychological thriller fanatics!
