How will it be when there will be a scarcity of electricity and the world will be in a dire necessity of enlightening? A French research company named Glowee came up with a drastic solution with bioluminescent lights, which they extracted from bacteria. These lights will be used to light up street signs and shop windows and fronts. Glowee performed a successful demo back in December, and this is a new revolution to the science of biotechnology.
Glowee founder Sandra Ray stated that their goal is to change the process of producing light and using it. She believes that through this, the electricity consumption globally can be reduced up to 19%.
The bioluminescent light is being created by filling up little transparent cases with a bacterial gel that causes illumination. A bio-chemical reaction inside Aliivibrio fischeri (Vibrio fischeri) – a kind of bacteria sized less than micro sizes does this. Other bacteria like Photobacterium Leiognathi are used in this process for the extraction of fluorescent materials.
In France, the retailers aren’t allowed to light their shops between 1 am to 7 am to limit the amount of electricity consumption. That is why; Glowee is working hard to improve the product by addition of extra nutrients and also they are processing to clean up waste. They also plan to survive the bacteria at a temperature of 20 °C or close to that.
So, by developing such sustainable solutions to enlightening the world, Glowee has left a benchmark and is working hard for the future projects.
