NASA is all set to break the sound barrier in a quiet way. it is in association with partners in the aviation industry in order to bring out a greener, safer and more efficient plane. NASA has awarded a contract to Lockheed Martin Aeronautics in association with GE Aviations and Tri Models Inc. to come up with a viable design plan for this concept plane.
The ear splitting sound created by these jets urged the US Federal Aviation dministration to ban overland flight in 1973. NASA said that it is trying to solve this issue and the way to do this is to invent a new plane that can bypass the sound but keep the speed.
NASA has envisioned an aircraft that will not have the sonic boom or yesteryears but emit a soft thump or beat. Lockheed is said to receive $20 million over the course of 17 months, to come up with a preliminary design that will meet NASA’s expectations for its Quiet Supersonic Technology (QueSST) program.
Jaiwon Shin, associate administration for NASA’s Aeronautic Research Mission Directorate, released a statement saying that NASA intends to see the public reaction to this new X-plane, in order to make it open for travel to the public.
Once the designs are presented, they shall be tested to see how practical and viable the idea might be, if found up to par NASA will go ahead with a different outsourcing firm most probably by 2020, in order to go ahead to built a perfect model to display.
