A magnetic, super rich businessperson who dwells in New York and is often ridiculed by his opponents as a con man and “crypto-facist clown”, boards his first trip for elected bureau.
He stunned his grave supporters with plead to patriotism and pride, wealth and family values. He also pledged to restore the promise of America.
The 1992 political documentary ‘Bob Roberts’ was about crusading Pennsylvania Senate who was a self-made millionaire singer.
It is highly likely that Bob Roberts will never stand under the banner of “Make America Great Again’, but it can surely be said that the “Times Are Changin’ Back” stratagem is definitely returning.
Trump’s election campaign of 2016 definitely resembles the 1990’s war cultures.
In the movie, Roberts is handsome, scrupulously clad in stylish cloth and spruced up. He is a archetypal yuppie with something extremely daunting about him. The role shows that he is a graduate from military school and holds an Ivy League degree.
He is a smooth business magnate whose campaign keeps doubling.
And much like the President campaign runner Trump in 2016, Roberts is very manipulative when it comes to media and does not shy away from broadcasting about his own affluence and how important it is for him to win.
The film portrays different political scenarios than it is today. It shows the many rising problems with drugs and contraband s to the legendary Saddam Hussein.
During the whole campaign Roberts is shown as ‘down-home fascism’.
“I wanna be rich, I don’t have a brain / So give me a handout while I complain,” goes one of the catchy songs written by Robbins and his older brother, David (their father was folk singer Gil Robbins of the Highwaymen). Roberts sings through most of his campaign with his guitar.
