A rumor has flooded the corridors which is sure to send a chill down any hipster bro’s spine. It is swirling that the hairstyle known as the top knot may ultimately lead to hair loss.

But before my bros start lopping off their adored buns, let’s take a fresh, deep breath and consider that there is NO solid scientific evidence that this is true (phew!). Rather, the commotion began when a dermatologist claimed to have seen an increase in traction alopecia among men, a condition that she says is caused by certain hairstyles that put tension on and ultimately damage hair follicles.

Later, to console the shattered, heavy souls, the dermatologist clarified that there are plenty of folks who do wear top knots yet don’t suffer from the type of condition she mentioned. The key to avoid this damage, she says, is to keep the knot looser on the head which is probably good advice regardless of the condition.

But this is the Internet, and all it takes is one snappy, hyped headline to rile people up. For those looking to play it safe and dodge the trend for good, try to acquire more information about it. Look it up in the internet and if needed consult a trusted dermatologist.
