Rejecting Transparency International’s corruption index, Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud termed the report as flawed and politically motivated. The minister remarked that the TIB assessed the reports through some persons, businessmen and committees where around 80 percent were BNP’s statements.
Hasan who is also the publicity and publication secretary of Awami League, said the government rejected the report and hoped that the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) would take necessary measures towards the matter. He further commented that TIB have not yet apologized even after their reports on Padma Bridge were proved wrong and they released a report on the 11th parliamentary elections even though they were not observers in the polls.
For a lack of effective government measures to fight corruption, Bangladesh went down six notches in the Transparency International’s global Corruption Perceptions Index 2018. Among South Asian countries, Bangladesh ranked the second lowest, only ahead of war-torn Afghanistan.
