Cow-race thrills Manikganj people

DOT Desk: A cow-race festival was organised at Bangkhari village in Sadar upazila where thousands of villagers from nearby areas thronged to witness the 200-years-old tradition, reports The Daily Sun. Two local social clubs–Choukighata and Bangkhari Pragati Club–jointly organised the contest in the club playground. A total of 30 cows from different parts of Nawabganj and Manikganj took part in the traditional cow race.
Spectators who came to enjoy the race said the race was arranged on a regular basis in the pas.
, but now it became irregular as cows for the race are hard to arrange.
Necessary initiatives should be taken to keep this traditional race continued as a rural heritage.
Bankkhuri Club President Motaleb Biswas said the traditional cow race has been organising in this village for some two hundred years. “As time goes on, it has now become harder to arrange cows for the race and contestants’ interest has decreased.”
To keep the rural heritage alive, he said they will try to organise the race once a year.
“Following this year’s success, we will organize the same next year,” he hopped.
Prize giving ceremony was held at the end of the contest in presence of the eminent personalities of the village.
