Maj Gen (retd) Abdur Rashid speaks to DOT
There is no international pressure behind the influx of Rohingyas from India. Pressure is on to take back the Rohingyas from Bangladesh. The international pressure has grown even more. In recent times, some Rohingya Muslims have crossed into Bangladesh from India. There are some 40,000 Rohingyas in India. India has announced that it will not allow any Rohingyas in the country. The Rohingyas staying in India have become frightened hardline of India. As a result, many Rohingyas are now individually crossing into Bangladesh from India.
The Rohingyas fleeing India are not getting themselves registered and no Rohingya will be repatriated without biometric registration.
Many want bilateral solution to the Rohingya crisis while many others in favour of multilateral solution. However, the diplomats are working on the two fronts.
Bangladesh has kept it open on both sides; bilateral and multilateral. The main objective of Bangladesh is to send back the Rohingyas to their country of origin so that they could live with dignity.
According to the UN, the Rohingyas are the most persecuted ethnic community in the world. Ethnic cleansing will not stop in the world if the UN cannot resolve the crisis amicably. Bangladesh is walking in the right direction activating the world powers for resolving the crisis. There is a solution to the crisis, although it may take some time.
