BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has stated that the ruling Awami League arranged the victory celebration rally to cover up its ‘moral defeat’ in the December 30 election, reported the Daily Observer.
“Awami League itself lost in the 11th national election of December 30. Countrymen have seen how vote rigging was conducted. There is nothing to rejoice or to celebrate victory after this vote rigging. It has arranged this victory celebration to conceal its moral defeat and divert people’s attention to a different direction from vote rigging.”
The BNP secretary general made the comment after paying tributes at the grave of party founder Ziaur Rahman on his 83rd birth anniversary yesterday. A delegation of BNP leaders, led by Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, went to the grave of Ziaur Rahman in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar at 10:am to pay their respects. Several BNP leaders and activists were also present on the occasion, paying their respects to the party founder.
Fakhrul alleged that Awami League has little respect for democracy even though they often talk about it, adding that AL had established one-party rule ‘Baksal’ in 1975 banning all the political parties and snatching people’s freedom of expression which is a clear sign that the party does not believe in democracy.
He also said Ziaur Rahman restored multi-party democracy and people’s freedom of expression.
“On the birthday of the party founding president, we’re vowing afresh to free democracy and our chairperson Kahleda Zia from jail and bring back home our acting chairman Tarique Rahman and reestablish democracy.”
Awami League held a grand rally at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital yesterday in celebration of their landslide victory in the 11th parliamentary election.
