Pran fined for ads containing false info

    DOT Desk: A food court in the capital Sunday fined Pran Agro Ltd Tk 200,000 for providing false and misleading information to consumers to sale its olive pickle.
    The court of special metropolitan magistrate Mehedi Pavel Sweet slapped the fine after dismissing Pran’s appeal, reports The New Age.
    The court found that to market the product Pran said in its ads that its olive pickles help shed weight, strengthen bones, ensure good health and prevents cancer.
    On October 16 last year Bangladesh Food Safety Authority’s inspector Kamarul Hasan accused Pran of misleading consumers with its ads flouting two sections of Bangladesh Food Safety Act.
    Pran chairman Ahsan Khan Chowdhury and executive director Sheikh Sajjad Hossain were accused in the food safety case.
    In November, they obtained bails pleading ignorance about Pran’s marketing strategy.
    The court exempted Ahsan Khan and Sajjad from punishments though it did not find the plea of their ignorance as credible, prosecutor Kamarul later told New Age.
    During the trial, defence lawyers made the plea that the accused were leading a company having 100,000 employees.
    The prosecutor submitted in the hearing that both the accused go enough time to take corrective measures after they got two notices from the Food Safety Authority regarding he false ads of Pran.
