The Awami League has expelled one of its party leaders Ruhul Amin on a Friday night in connection with the gangrape of a woman in Subarnachar upazila of Noakhali district, reported The Observer.
Subarnachar upazila unit AL president Omar Farooq said Ruhul Amin, the publication secretary of Subarnachar upazila unit AL, was expelled during an emergency party meeting at night. It has been alleged that ‘supporters’ of Ruhul Amin gangraped a woman on the night of the general election on December 30 and tied up her family.
Police arrested seven people so far, including Amin himself, in connection with the incident. Amin is also a former union council member, according to a report by BDnews.
“The party cannot take responsibility for crimes committed by personal offences,” stated Awami League leader Omar Farooq. However, the others arrested in connection with the case are not involved with the Awami League and so the party cannot take any action against them, he added.
Chorjabbar Police Station Inspector Ibrahim Khalil said that police are continuing operations to arrest those accused in the case.
