For a democratic system to work there can be no alternative to having a strong opposition party

Dr. Badiul Alam Majumder speaks to DOT :
A total of 39 political parties participated in the 11th parliamentary election with a total of 1861 contenders against the 300 parliamentary constituencies. Awami League-led 14-party grand alliance won 288 seats and hence, there shall not be any strong opposition party in the next parliament. In emerging democracies around the world the opposition plays an increasingly important role in shaping policy agendas, conducting civic education, and fighting corruption, singly or in alliance with other entities. The real work of the opposition begins the day after a general election and it should not simply pack up and go home. An opposition political party should endeavor to build strong party institutions with vibrant internal democracy. The goal should be intensifying democracy within the party before it can become champions of national democracy and good governance. Democracy cannot thrive without a viable and vibrant opposition.
In this regard, Dr. Badiul Alam Majumder said that the system of democracy bases on checks and balance and an effecting transparent mechanism where the role of opposition party is undeniable. Without having any opposition party, the whole system is like to collapse as there shall be no checks and balance. For a parliamentary system to work, it is crucial to have an opposition party. Now, after this 11th parliamentary election; the winning party may come for a grand compromise for inclusion of an opposition party in order to ensure efficient running of a democratic system as otherwise the country may lose democracy, which is one of the fundamental basis of its Constitution.
