Ensure overall security on polls day: CEC to law enforcers

    Hossen Sohel of DOT : Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda yesterday called upon members of law enforcement agencies to ensure overall security so that people can cast their votes in a free, fair and festive atmosphere on the day of December 30 national election, reports The Daily Star.
    The CEC came up with the call while talking to reporters at Nirbachan Bhaban in Dhaka’s Agargaon area two days before beginning of the 11th parliamentary election.
    “I expect that the law enforcers would ensure security so that the people cast vote freely to their desired candidates and return home safely,” Huda said.
    He also drew attention of the law enforcement agencies to ensure security especially to the people of minority communities during the voting.
    The law enforcers will have to be watchful so that no one can intercept any voter in choosing their own candidates through the ballots, the CEC said.
    The campaign by the political parties for the election ended across the country this morning.
    The restriction came into effect around 8:00am as per the Representation of the People Order (RPO) 1972 and no political party or independent candidate is allowed to continue their polls drives after the time.
    The article 78 (1) of the RPO stated, “None shall convene, hold or attend any public meeting, promote or join in any procession within the area of any constituency during the period beginning at forty eight hours prior to start of the poll and ending at forty-eight hours after conclusion of the poll for any election in that constituency.”
    The voting will start around 8:00am on Sunday and continue till 4:00pm without any break.
    About this election, Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda said the December 30 national election must be held in a free, fair and credible manner as the highest number of candidates are participating in the election.
