Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) will scan United Corporation’s financial transactions through banking channels.“The firm’s (United Corporation) financial transactions in banks will be scanned,” BFIU Chief Razee Hassan told Amader Orthoneeti yesterday. The BFIU is an independent wing of Bangladesh Bank to deal with money laundering and terrorist financing issues. The BFIU move came following Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) men on Tuesday detained Ali Haider, Managing Director of United Corporation, along with two aides and seized Tk. 8 crore in cash and seven cheques worth Tk. 10 crore from their possession.
Rab officials primarily suspected that the seized money was instrumental to succeed a conspiracy to influence election and provoking violence across the country centering national polls.
They said the three detainees have been distributing money in Motijheel and Gulshan areas.
Meanwhile, Rab officials said that part of the money came from Dubai through Hundi, which is not legal in Bangladesh. They said the cheques are of different amount and authorised for encashment at Prime bank, Trust bank, UCB, Union bank, AB bank, The city bank and Islami bank.
On this backdrop, Razee Hassan said the BFIU already strengthened vigilance to prevent unwanted flow of money in the country.
“We have revised the reporting schedule by banks on suspicious transactions from monthly to weekly so that we can act quickly,” he said.
“We are on vigil. It is our routine work,” he said.
