Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has alleged rampant violations of electoral code throughout the nation ahead of the election.
In a statement published yesterday, the independent watchdog expressed grave concerns over the Election Commission’s inaction over the violations and attacks as well as intimidation and harassment on opposition activists, reports The Daily Star.
TIB said the commission might lose its trust if it moves to curb live cast from voting centers, mobile phone and restrict the media in carrying out its responsibilities. It called upon the commission to be active in upholding its constitutional duty and carry it with the virtues of self-respect and righteousness.
“Since the start of electioneering, opposition activists have been attacked, sued, intimidated and harassed,” TIB Executive Director Iftekharuzzaman said.
“The commission’s lax in addressing these issues are concerning. Not only are the opposition activists facing challenges from the ruling party, but also from the police.”
“Media reports indicate that opposition men are facing discrimination from police,” he added.
