Dr. Asif Nazrul speaks to DOT:
Jatiya Oikya Front has almost finalized its draft manifesto and it shall publish its manifesto for the 11th parliamentary election on December 17.
The pledges will include – ensuring a standard education system, scrapping public exams like the Primary Education Certificate and Junior School Certificate for fifth and eighth graders respectively, holding a centralized admission test for all public universities, and holding student union elections in all academic institutes — within a year of taking office, ensuring a balance of power and decentralizing the administration and through recruiting 50% of parliamentary committee members from the opposition. Most importantly, it shall also include a law barring a prime minister from serving two consecutive terms. The power of the president will be boosted and the president will not have to consult the prime minister.
All these have been reported to be in the manifesto of Jatiyo Oikyo Front.
In this regard, Dr. Asif Nazrul, Professor of Law of University of Dhaka said that if these pledges are truly reflected in Jatiyo Oikyo Front’s manifesto then it should be regarded as a positive step towards bringing back democracy in Bangladesh.
These proposed changes of Jatiyo Oikyo Front were demanded before by the civil society members, however; this is for the first time a political party is going to include them in its manifesto.
