Khaleda’s election dreams shattered

    Sayeed Muhammad of DOT :  The Election Commission has rejected all the three appeals of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia filed against the cancellation of her nominations for Feni-1, Bogura-6 and Bogura-7 constituencies.
    With the development, the doors of her running the polls race closed.
    The commission delivered its order despite another Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukder granted all the three appeals filed by Khaleda challenging the decisions of returning officers over the rejection of her nomination papers, reports The Daily Star.
    Lawyers for Khaleda– Ali, Joynal Abedin and Mahmud Bin Khokon– appeared before the commission to represent.
    The returning officer scrapped the former prime minister’s nomination papers for violating saying that she violated section 12 (1) (d) of the RPO, Khaleda’s lawyer Mohammad Ali claimed. This section deals with electoral offences but Khaleda Zia was convicted on charge of corruption.The EC has started hearing of the remaining 233 petitions, filed against the decisions of returning officers over the rejection and acceptance of nomination papers.
    A total of 543 petitions were filed with the EC challenging the decisions of returning officers over rejection and acceptance of nomination papers submitted to contest th11 the general election slated for December 30.
    The three-time premier has been in jail since February 8 upon her conviction in a graft case.
