SC: Scrutinize Rabbani’s nomination paper within 24hrs

    Desk Report
The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has asked the Rangpur district returning officer to finish scrutinizing the nomination paper of BNP-nominated candidate, and Jamaat leader, Prof Golam Rabbani—within 24 hours of accepting it, reports Dhaka Tribune.
The seven-member bench of the Supreme Court – led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain – passed the order on Wednesday—after disposing of the appeal petition filed by the returning officer, reports UNB.
Advocate AJ Mohammad Ali represented Rabbani, while attorney general Mahbubey Alam represented the state.
Previously, on December 3, the High Court directed the Rangpur district returning officer to accept Rabbani’s nomination paper for the Rangpur 5 constituency.
Rabbani’s lawyer Shishir Monir said: “When Golam Rabbani went to the returning officer to submit his nomination paper, on November 28, the returning officer did not accept his nomination paper. However, now the court has directed the Election Commission to accept his nomination paper as soon as possible.”
Rabbani also submitted a written application to the Chief Election Commissioner on December 1.
Following the High Court order, the district returning officer filed an appeal petition with the Supreme Court.
