It would suffice to say that these days, intelligence needs to be divided into separate sub-divisions and one of the more vital ones being emotional intelligence, this issue is just not something we can shun anymore. Psychology Today cites that emotional intelligence is tied to identifying your emotions and those of others, controlling them and applying them to tasks.
The first skill that one needs to hone when trying to attain emotional intelligence is self-awareness. To be honest, most people do not realize how much work one needs to do in order to be actively self-aware and think about how their decisions affect themselves and the people around them. Although overthinking and procrastination is also a flag, it is imperative for a person who wants to attain emotional intelligence to be self-aware.
The next bit is something that really goes hand in hand with being human. Empathy. Well, if you cannot put yourself in the shoes of the person you are interacting with there is no way that you can react in a calm and controlled manner, which essentially is the sign of honed emotional intelligence. Sometimes, a bit of empathy can take you a long way.
The very last step however, lies in determination and balance. Determination is imperative, for you must strive to complete the task at hand no matter what. Often, when we are faced with insurmountable odds, our emotions get the better of us and rigid determination is the only thing that can help us come out as a better person. And while we need to put enough effort into our work and stray far from neglecting our professional lives, we must maintain balance between our work and personal lives in order to maintain a balance of emotions. Only with all these aspects in mind, can we attain true emotional intelligence.
