MEZIK POTETU
I thought crazy Harry Potter theories were enough for my daily dose of shock but it turns out that most of the movies I have watched are not as humdrum as I thought they were. I am pretty sure that you are about to experience that “whaaat? REALLY?” moment, so keep on reading!
500 DAYS OF SUMMER: Our favorite romantic comedy is not actually all it is chalked out to be. We fell in love with Joseph’s character because he seemed like the perfect lover, but this is where you are wrong. Watch the movie again and you will start to notice that our charming “boyfriend” is actually a selfish and obsessive person who is trapped in delusions.
GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES: This movie is lauded by the critics and everyone else who watched it to be one of the best anti-war films of all time. However, director Isao Takahata says that the movie is nothing of that sort, and that it is actually about how children need to learn how to suck it up and deal with life no matter how hard it is, and respect their elders while they are at it. I do not know about you, but that kind of ruins the movie for me so….yeah, I will choose not to believe Takahata!
THE SHINING: Adapted from a horror-fiction novel, and screened as a horror movie classic, it is not really about ghosts. I know right!? It is actually about the destructive nature of alcohol and how the male lead, Jack Torrance, went completely nuts because the ghosts of the hotel kept feeding him alcohol.
FIGHT CLUB: This was subject to a lot of controversy when it came out because of its adamant glorification of violence. However, the film is actually against hyper masculinity, and Tyler is not the ideal masculine but psychopath antagonist that no one should ever follow. Ironic, how the film was the reason behind the birth of so many fight clubs.
DRAG ME TO HELL: This one is interesting and very symbolic- it is about… wait for it… eating disorders! Can you recall how the main character was a chubby child, and used to lie about her eating habits. The food she tries to eat becomes bizarre and scary, and the “demons” keep trying to force puke down her throat. Plus, no one but her can actually see what is happening to her.
INCEPTION: I do not think any one of us is sure about the ending of this movie. At the end of the movie, does the top fall down? So, was Cobb dreaming or was that the reality? Well, according to the writer and director, we totally missed the entire point of the movie- in the end, Cobb does not give a damn about the top and just looks to his children, and that is exactly what we should have been doing.
