Careers are something we start to make from ground up from the moment we step out in to the real world. We spend our entire lives trying to make something out of it. Some are successful in doing so, while some not so much. Even the smallest missteps can take you back valuable steps of progress. People tend to look for whatever little tips and guides they can get to make this career-building experience as optimal as possible. So here are a few mistakes can set you back a long way:
    1. Trusting the Wrong People: This is self-explanatory. People can be and are generally cruel. They can step over you if it’s in the way to their goals. So don’t mingle with the wrong groups and tread lightly. Make sure you know someone before telling them your deepest darkest secrets.
    2. Not Finding a Relevant Mentor: Mentors are very important in whatever line of work you get in to. They give you an ideal to strive towards and surpass. If you don’t have that sort of figure in your life, you’ll often times be left without motivation to work and improve at what you do.
    3. Prioritizing Salary over Learning: This is one of the most common mistakes people make. Money is great and all, but it’s not the only thing that matters. You shouldn’t chase after just the monetary value of things. Just because some new job opened up at this relatively unknown new firm that offers to pay a lot does not mean you leave your current job at a well-established firm with a slightly lower salary. You can learn so much from the right work and environment, something money can never teach you.
    4. Specializing too soon: Most work usually comes with a branch of opportunities. Don’t just pick one of these branches and call it yours. Go out and try as many different things as you can to find out what really best suits you. Just because you like game development or the idea of it, does not mean you shouldn’t go delve in to a bit of software design with your programming skills. Check your options out first-hand before committing.
    5. Expecting Opportunities to come to you: This is probably one of the most important one. Many people expect success to just come to them. They just expect a job offer here or a raise there. They feel they “deserve” as much. Never make that mistake.
Go out and get it. Work at it. Make yourself stand out and don’t just sit there feeling you deserve it. Make others believe that you deserve it as well.
