Safe route for drug trafficking

    Desk Report
Organised rings of drug traders are using Dhaka-Tangail Highway as a safe route for trafficking illegal narcotics from northern districts to different places in the country, including the capital, reports Daily Star.
The traders use their men to carry the consignments to other places after hiding those in the vehicles.
Although some illegal narcotics, mostly Phensidyl and cannabis, were seized by law enforcers, most of the large consignments pass through safely.
A team of Detective Branch (DB) of police seized a laguna from Rabna bypass area on the highway and found 707 bottles of banned Phensidyl syrup, which were hidden under the backseats and boxes in the cabin of the vehicle.
The law enforcers also arrested two people from the vehicle in this connection, said Shyamol Dutta, officer-in-charge of Tangail DB (South).
On Monday, members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) chased a private car in Ashekpur bypass area along the highway and seized the vehicle. They recovered 88 kilograms of cannabis from it.
The law enforcers also arrested three people from the car in this connection, said Major Rabiul Islam, commander of Crime Prevention Company-3 of Rab-12.
On September 8, members of the elite force seized a truck at Bangabandhu Bridge east end and recovered 788 bottles of banned phensidyl syrup from the vehicle.
The law enforcers also arrested two people in this connection.
During preliminary interrogation, the arrestees confessed to the law enforcers that they collected Phensidyl from Chapainawabganj and supplied it to different places in the country, including the capital, Rab officials said.
Tangail Superintendent of Police Sanjit Kumar Roy said police are launching drives to destroy the drug dens in the district and also keeping the highway under watch. “Intelligence activities have been increased on the highway to seize the consignments of illegal narcotics,” he added.
